- Nintendo Revolution Announced
Gamecube News
- Nintendo today unveiled photos and details of their Revolution console at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Like the XBox 360 and Playstation 3, it features wireless controllers, gigabit ethernet and Wi-Fi support. Nintendo's last console, the game cube, did not have many broadband enhancements. The Revolution will come with an Xbox live-style matchmaking service. Revolution will be " two-to-three times more powerful than GameCube ," according to Nintendo, which also acknowledges that the next-generation race isn't solely about new technologies. By contrast, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is 13-15 times more powerful than the first, according to the publisher. And Sony says it's PlayStation 3 is roughly 35 times more powerful than PlayStation 2. It will be backward compatible with the Nintendo GameCube 8cm discs and takes 12cm optical discs. Nintendo partners with IBM and ATI on their processor and graphics chips. It will be Wi-Fi enabled out of the box and Internet ready, featuring quick start-up time and quiet, low-power operation. Sony's PlayStation 2 has sold more than 80 million units, world-wide. Microsoft has sold 13.2 million Xboxes in the US and 19.9 million worldwide, while Nintendo is in third place with about 20 million GameCubes worldwide, and around 10 million in North America. In the US alone, people spent $10bn on video games last year, according to the BBC. " You can't talk about Nintendo without considering its dominant position in the hand-held market ," said Doug Lowenstein, president of industry group Entertainment Software Assn. But even that dominance is in danger of being chipped away by Sony's recent entry, PlayStation Portable. In the U.S., for example, sales of the PSP and the DS are in a dead heat, with 1.7 million DS units shipped as of March 31, compared with 1.5 million PSPs. Here, the challenge for Nintendo is similar to the one it faces in home consoles: appealing to older gamers.
